Even the TC Electronics´ version is not as good as the UAD one. Regarding vocals I compared the Universal Audio 1176 with the other ones and I found that they are not as capable to reproduce the special effect of the hardware (that was also made by Universal Audio) on lead vocals so well that it cuts through a mix like nothing else. Not only my impression, but I found the same opinion in Tischmeyer`s book on mixing.
I don´t like it so much on bass instruments (bass and BD) because for my taste it has the tendency to make them sound thin. Used them ever since because I love them.
Mastering engineer F Tischmeyer recommended them once to me and I got the Universal Audio ones (with the UAD Card).
